Canvas and frames

One material, made properly, instead of five made approximately. Every Maud Moon piece is the same object: an original design by Maud, printed on cotton canvas, stretched over a wooden bar, and set inside a solid wood floater frame in one of two colours.

The canvas

Your work is printed onto 400gsm artist grade cotton canvas. That is a heavy, closely woven cloth with a visible tooth, which is what lets the painted surface keep its texture instead of flattening out.

  • Canvas: cotton, 400gsm, matte finish
  • Stretcher bar: solid wood, 38mm deep
  • Ink: water based, rated for up to 200 years of display permanence
  • Care: a dry soft cloth. No water, no cleaning products

Why matte and not gloss

The surface of every Maud Moon design is painted, with the brush stroke and the grain of the paint visible. A gloss finish lays a mirror over exactly that, and in a room with a window you end up looking at the reflection instead of the work. Matte keeps the texture, which is the whole point.

The frame

A floater frame, sometimes called a shadow gap frame. The canvas sits free inside the frame with a narrow gap between the two, so the piece appears to float rather than being pressed behind a border. It is the finish you normally see in a gallery.

  • Visible edge: 12mm
  • Shadow gap: 5mm
  • Depth from the wall: 53mm
  • Hanging: hardware is fitted, nothing to assemble

Natural, light wood

Blond, almost untinted wood with a black inner face. It sits quietly next to oak, birch and pale plaster, and it lets the deep blue of the night work do the talking. This is the one most people choose for a child's room.

Brown, dark wood

Warm and dark, with more grain showing. It takes a side. Choose it for walnut furniture, dark floors, and for a room that is not a nursery. It works particularly well with The Quiet Hours.

What we do not claim

We do not tell you a person painted your canvas by hand, because that is not what happens. Every design is developed in the studio and then made into a real object with real materials. We would rather tell you than have you wonder.

We also do not claim the frames are hand finished. They are made by our production partner to the specification above, and the numbers on this page come from that specification, not from marketing copy.

Made when you order it

Nothing sits in a warehouse. Your canvas is printed, stretched and framed only after you order, in the print workshop closest to your delivery address. Production takes 5 to 8 working days, and shipping is free wherever you are.
